No doubt, many people will think that with this type of fishing, only bottom-dwelling fish will take the bait. However, in reality, six-hooked fishing still attracts fish from higher water layers to bite continuously, thanks to effective bait placement techniques and the skilful use of six-hooked rigs.

Unlike single hooks, where the fish holds the hook in its mouth, with a six-pronged hook the fish becomes hooked anywhere around the head, body or tail; therefore, using a six-pronged hook is more effective and catches more fish.

Six-pronged hooks play a crucial role in the success of a fishing trip, so how do you choose the right, effective six-pronged hook for your fishing? Read this article to find the answer and discover the best and most suitable six-pronged hooks for your next fishing trip!

Some types of six-pronged hooks

A six-pronged hook is a type of multi-pronged fishing hook with six prongs. It comes in various shapes, each suited to a different fishing style, depending on the target species the angler is aiming for. However, there are currently three types of six-pronged hooks that are very popular amongst anglers, namely: stealth six-pronged hooks, offshore six-pronged hooks and budget six-pronged hooks.

Six-pronged hooks

Hooks are categorised by the type of fishing technique used, with each type designed to suit specific methods; bottom-fishing hooks are typically made with heavier weights, thicker lines and larger, sturdier hooks than those used for float fishing, as the technique involves waiting for the fish to take the bait near its lair; when it makes contact (tỳ) with the hook, pulling the float under, the angler then strikes, whichever part of the fish makes contact with the hook, it will be caught. This method requires the angler to watch the float closely, as the bait may only be touched once or twice in a whole session.

Floating hook

In contrast to the ‘tỳ’ method, where the float is pulled under, the ‘bềnh’ method involves striking the line as soon as the float rises; not only are hooks categorised as ‘tỳ’ and ‘bềnh’, but floats are also divided into ‘bềnh’ and ‘tỳ’ types

Invisible hook

For those with small hands who prefer a gentler style of fishing, the hidden hook will be your top choice. The hidden hook is particularly well-suited to the floating rig method.
Here are some criteria to help you choose the best hidden hook:

  1. Small, delicate hands
  2. Small hooks suited to each appropriate hook size
  3. A lightweight lead base to match the float you choose
  4. A sharp hook that holds the fish securely

Offshore six-pronged hooks

Whilst other six-hook rigs may become blunt after a short period of use, offshore six-pronged hooks have the advantage of lasting a very long time; when they do become blunt, you simply need to sharpen them to fish as effectively as new ones. Offshore six-pronged hooks are best suited for catching grass carp.

Cheap six-pronged hooks

There are many types of cheap six-pronged hooks advertised on the market today; however, regardless of the hook you choose, you should bear the following factors in mind to select the best six-pronged hook at an affordable price, and avoid paying a high price for something that proves ineffective.

  • Firstly, the hook should be one ly in size, with a moderate gape and a high holding power.
  • Secondly, a moderately stiff shank, allowing for a quick hookset.
  • Thirdly, a brass shank in a bullet shape, which helps the hook rise quickly and prevents it from bending upon impact.
  • Finally, the hook material must be made from gun spring steel or cold-rolled Russian steel, ensuring high hardness and a sharp edge that does not dull.

Furthermore, to select a suitable and effective six-pronged hook, you should also bear in mind the following four principles to help you choose the most accurate and effective hook for your needs.

1/ When fishing at a distance, you should use a large hook to prevent it from flipping over; when fishing close to the surface, use a small hook.

2/ When fishing in shallow water, use a small six-pronged hook with a short shank; when fishing in deep water, use a large hook with a large sinker and a short shank. In cases where you are fishing at extreme depths, it is best to use a large four-pronged hook with a large sinker and a short shank.

3/ When fishing in clear water, use small hooks; in murky water, use large hooks.

4/ If you intend to catch large fish, you should prepare large hooks to make the process easier; for small fish, use small hooks.

If your six-pronged hook meets the above criteria, your trip is sure to be a success.

We hope that the advice above will help you choose the most suitable hook and ensure success on every fishing trip.
