Which type of float is most effective for night-time fishing?
A. Classification of night fishing floats
Whether used for day or night fishing, floats consist of the following four parts:
- Float body: this part is teardrop-shaped and made from a material with a specific gravity lower than that of water. The float body must always float on the water’s surface.
- Float rod: The float rod is constructed from fibreglass rods.
- Float cap: this part is usually made of foam and comes in bright colours so that the angler can easily spot the signal when a fish has taken the bait.
- Float base and mounting bracket: This part is also made from fibreglass rods.

Night fishing floats are specifically designed for night-time fishing. A common feature of this type of float is that it emits light, making it easy for anglers to see the signs of a fish taking the bait.
There are usually two types of night fishing floats: night fishing floats with a light bulb and night fishing floats fitted with a line stick.
1. Night fishing floats with a light bulb
This type of night fishing float is similar to a daytime fishing float but is fitted with a battery and a light. Manufacturers usually design the battery compartment so that it can be detached from the float body. This allows you to use the float for daytime fishing as well.
The float’s battery is very powerful and can be used continuously for 3 to 4 days without running out of power. The light is also quite bright, helping anglers to see more clearly in the dark.

However, this type of night fishing float with a light is rather expensive. Therefore, if you are on a tight budget, you can opt for option number 2: the night fishing float with a line stick.
2. Night fishing float with a line stick
The main feature of the night fishing float with a line stick is that it is cheaper than the battery-operated type. A ‘ligne stick’ is a rod with a luminescent tip that emits light at night. However, the light from a night fishing float fitted with a ‘ligne stick’ is usually not very bright. Furthermore, the ‘ligne stick’ often slips off.
We therefore recommend investing in a night fishing float with a light bulb for long-term use.
