1. Suitable locations for snakehead fishing

Snakeheads are a very robust and resilient species of fish; they can be found in any area with water. Naturally, they will usually choose locations that offer them the best possible living conditions: convenient hiding spots from which to easily attack prey, comfortable nesting sites, and so on…

For this reason, according to the experience of many seasoned and professional anglers, areas with muddy water, dense vegetation or floating duckweed, and warm water temperatures are ideal spots where snakehead fish are frequently found.

2. Snakehead fishing techniques

When snakehead fish detect an unusual scent from bait underwater, they tend to strike more quickly. Therefore, you need to prepare your snakehead fishing bait carefully and thoroughly to attract the fish more easily. Some simple, readily available bait options you might consider include: tadpoles, earthworms, and bloodworms… for trolling for snakehead fish (trolling involves dragging the bait slowly across the water’s surface to catch snakehead fish). Simply drag the bait a few times just beneath the water’s surface and the snakehead will quickly come to bite the bait within a short time.

In addition, there is another fairly simple method you can use, known as ‘stalking’ (which involves walking along the edges of rice fields or ‘gaps’ in the bank to lie in wait for snakehead fish). This method is suitable in areas with ponds or lakes, or where there is lush rice or tall, thick grass. You simply need to stand still and gently shake the tip of the rod, causing the bait to move across the water’s surface, thereby mimicking a frog’s leap to lure the snakehead into the trap.

Snakehead are voracious eaters and, thanks to their sharp teeth, bite with great force; consequently, finding suitable bait for them is not particularly difficult. You can use earthworms, small fish, young frogs or lizards, amongst others, as bait. If possible, you should opt for water beetle larvae, as these are considered a favourite treat for snakehead fish. However, bear in mind that when fishing for snakehead, you should use whole, live bait, as this will be far more effective at attracting and luring them.

Furthermore, snakehead fish strike their bait very quickly; indeed, they are arguably the most aggressive of all river fish. Although they are voracious, they are also quite cautious and selective when taking bait. If the bait is unstable or moves, they will swim away and will not return to take it.

3. When is the best time to fish for snakehead?

One of the key factors in ensuring a successful snakehead fishing session is the timing. Snakeheads particularly enjoy hunting in cool, shaded areas. They often inhabit areas near the bank, where there is mud and water lilies to help them blend into their surroundings. During the hot season, the best times to fish are at dawn (from 4 am to 8 am) or in the late afternoon (from 5 pm to 7 pm). These are relatively quiet periods, so snakehead fish feed very actively.
