How does stream fishing differ from lake or pond fishing?

Unlike fishing in ponds and lakes, stream fishing is much more challenging because streams have a natural current, which can easily affect your fishing. Stream currents are generally divided into two types: fast and slow.

If you’re fishing in a stream with a fast current, you’ll need to be very adaptable, as the fish will also be swimming very quickly with the current. Conversely, if you’re fishing in a stream with a slow current, you’ll need the skill to spot where the fish are hiding. You should move continuously whilst stream fishing, moving against the direction of the current.

 

Where do stream fish usually hide? To increase your chances of success, you should fish in the following locations:

 

• Stream banks
• Rocks
• Bushes
• Stream mouths

When fishing for stream fish, you should fish at dawn or dusk. These are the two times of day when the fish are most likely to take the bait.

 

How to choose a stream fishing rod

1. Choose a rod that is as stiff as possible

The first criterion when choosing a stream fishing rod is that it must be stiff. Streams contain numerous crevices, caves and nooks and crannies… and these are where the fish take shelter. When fishing here, there will be many obstacles, so to be successful you must reel the fish straight in to the bank. If your stream fishing rod isn’t stiff enough, you’ll struggle to pull the fish straight up; this means there’s a high risk of the fish slipping from your grasp.

 

 

When choosing a stream fishing rod, you should opt for one with a stiffness rating of H or higher. Stream fishing rods with an EH stiffness rating are even better.

 

2. Choose a stream fishing rod that is as light as possible

As mentioned above, when stream fishing you have to move around constantly, so you cannot keep the rod fixed in one spot. In this case, you should choose a stream fishing rod that is as light as possible.

A lightweight stream fishing rod ensures anglers do not experience hand fatigue even when holding it for extended periods.

 

3. Opt for a rod of moderate length
