Which rod and line should I choose for catching strong, feisty catfish?

A guide to choosing a catfish fishing rod

When choosing a catfish fishing rod, there are three factors you need to consider: material, length and strength.

Rod Material

You should prioritise catfish rods made from fibreglass. The advantages of this material are its excellent strength and high flexibility, making it suitable for catching aggressive fish such as catfish.
For anglers new to catching catfish, it is advisable to choose a solid-core rod. This is because, when starting out, you may lack experience in handling the fish and could encounter situations where the fish’s struggle causes the rod to snap. Solid rods are constructed from tightly woven fibreglass strands, giving them high strength and rigidity, making them resistant to breakage. They can withstand the powerful bites and violent jerks of fierce catfish.

However, this type of rod is usually slightly heavier than a lure rod.

When fishing in natural rivers and lakes, where large catfish are rare, a catfish rod with a stiffness rating of around M is sufficient and will provide a more responsive feel.

For anglers who prefer to catch catfish in large commercial lakes, stiffer rods with a higher load capacity are recommended; you should choose a rod with a stiffness rating of MH or higher.

Suitable length

What is the ideal length for a catfish rod?

The choice of rod length depends on the terrain where you intend to fish for catfish. Catfish rods are typically between 2.1 and 3 metres in length.

When fishing in natural terrain, the rod length should be chosen based on the width of the area:

• When fishing for catfish in small rivers, ponds or lakes where there are many overhanging trees, rods measuring approximately 1.8–2.1 metres are suitable
• If you wish to fish in large rivers or wide lakes, catfish rods measuring 2.4–2.7 metres or 3 metres and above are the most suitable.

In addition, you should also pay attention to how the rod feels in your hands. In other words, if you feel comfortable holding a catfish rod of length ‘a’ and find it easy to perform fishing techniques, then you should buy it. If, however, you feel uncomfortable or encounter difficulties whilst carrying out fishing manoeuvres, you should switch to a slightly shorter or longer model.
